BRIEFLY YES movie night Friday

NEWPORT — Youth Emergency Services of Pend Oreille County is hosting a Friday the 13th Movie Night from 3–5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. The movie is horror- comedy “The Final Girls” and is rated PG-13. This is a free event for ages 12–24 only. There will be pizza.

YES is located at 229 N. Calispel Ave., Newport.

Create adds two classes

NEWPORT — This month, Create Arts Center has two new classes and an ongoing studio.

Weezil is offering an intricate wire Norse weave jewelry class from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19. The class is $20, plus a $5 materials fee. According to a Create news release, this is a popular class where participants each have a beautiful product to take home. Pre-registration is required.

A fancy round basket class with Olivia is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. This is a beginner-level class. Participants are to bring thin needle rose pliers and a lunch. To pre-register as required, visit Create in-person or online at www.createarts.org.

Once a month on the third Wednesday, a hand stitchery studio group meets from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at Create.

Quilts, appliqué, embroidery, SLO stitch, stump work, cross stitch and other styles are welcome.

Write Your Own Poetry Book at Create

NEWPORT — Create Arts Center is hosting a Write Your Own Poetry Book Workshop from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21.

The class is free for ages 12 to 17 and $25 for those 18 and older. Participants are encouraged to bring memorabilia like postcards, old magazines, etc., but supplies will be available.

Blanchard student on UA Dean’s List

TUSCALOOSA — Elizabeth Floch of Blanchard was named to the University of Alabama Dean’s List for the fall 2025 term.

A total of 15,388 students enrolled during the term were named to the Dean’s List with an academic record of 3.5 or higher.

ID Teacher of the Year nominations open

BOISE — The Idaho Department of Education has opened nominations for the CapEd Credit Union Idaho Teacher of the Year, the state’s highest honor for teaching talent, according to a department news release.

The 2027 Idaho Teacher of the Year will receive a $10,000 cash reward, courtesy of CapEd Credit Union, and travel across the state to engage with educators, legislators and policymakers on teaching, curriculum and other topics. They will also serve as Idaho’s nominee for National Teacher of the Year, representing the state at several National Teacher of the Year events.

Anyone, including parents, students and colleagues, may nominate any Idaho traditional or charter school educator teaching any subject at any grade level.

Nominations are due to the department by Wednesday, March 11. Nominees will be notified the week after the nomination deadline and will have until mid-May to submit their applications. All application materials will be reviewed by a selection committee, and the winner will be announced this fall.
