NEWPORT — All three school district levies in Pend Oreille County are passing as of Tuesday night. However, the Newport School District’s facility renovation bond is failing.
Voters also approved the merger the Pend Oreille Fire Districts Nos. 4 and 2.
The Newport School District voters are denying a $46.3 million bond measure 1,412 opposed to 1,216 in favor. The bond was proposed at an estimated rate of $1.89 per $1,000 in assessed property value for up to 23 years and, unlike the other measures on the ballot, required a supermajority approval of at least 60% to pass. As of Tuesday night at 8 p.m., it was failing with 53.73% denying and 46.27% in favor.
Voters approved a proposal to merge Fire District No. 4 into Fire District No. 2 481-160, as of Tuesday night. If approved, the merger is effective Friday, Feb. 20.
All school districts in Pend Oreille County are approving the renewal of their three-year Educational Programs and Operations levies. Unlike bonds, levies only require a simple majority.
Newport’s three-year $8.8 million levy is passing 1,493-1,145, 56.60% to 43.40%. If approved the levy will be collected at an estimated rate of $1.45 per $1,000, starting next year.
The Cusick School District’s three-year $1.6 million ballot is also passing, 69.24% to 30.76%, 511-227. The levy will collect $1.02 per $1,000 assessed valuation in 2027, $1.01 in 2028 and $1 in 2029.
Up north, Selkirk’s three-year $2.48 million EPO levy is also passing, 324--294, 52.43% to 47.57%. If approved, it is estimated to be collected at a rate of $1.58 per $1,000.
With a 39.05% voter turnout so far, 4,009 ballots have been counted as of 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 in Pend Oreille County. The county has 10,266 registered voters, and ballots will continue to be counted as they arrive at the Auditor’s Office, if they are postmarked by Feb. 10.
