Join the Seed Library

PRIEST RIVER — Gardening season is coming fast, and The Seed Library is preparing to stock the Priest River and Blanchard libraries with donated open-pollinated and heirloom seeds that home gardeners can plant and grow at home. Ideally, those plants will bear seed that can be shared for the next growing season.

“By saving seeds as a community we help create local seed stocks that are better acclimated to our area,” volunteer Katie Crill said. “With downturns in the economy, gardening is one way to avoid food insecurity, and saving seeds is a way to combat the rising price of garden seeds. The Seed Library provides starter packs of seeds at no cost to gardeners.” Volunteers will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 at the Priest River Library. Anyone interested in saving vegetable, herb or flower seeds is welcome to help package and organize donated seeds. Seed saving resources will be available, and seed savers will share their knowledge.

The Seed Library accepts any open-pollinated (non-hybrid) seeds, whether homegrown or left over from past gardens. For more information, email [email protected] or call the library at 208-448-2207.
