Two losses end Lady Rangers’ season

METALINE FALLS — The Selkirk High School girls’ basketball team’s season ended last week after two losses at the Northeast 1B league tournament in Deer Park.

Wednesday, Feb. 11, Selkirk (14-10, 8-4) played Wellpinit (11-11, 5-5), losing 43-35.

The Rangers next played Inchelium (14-8, 7-5) in a fifth-place game Saturday, Feb. 14, losing again 62-21.

“We had a tough time getting much going on the offensive end in our last few games,” Selkirk coach Kelly Cain said. “Too many turnovers and missed shots.”

Inchelium took a 4-1 lead in the first quarter, outscoring Selkirk as much as 22-12 in the second quarter. Inchelium kept the Rangers at bay for the rest of the game, outscoring Selkirk 19-4 in the third quarter and 17-4 in the fourth quarter.

“While it was a tough way to finish the season,” Cain said, “the team did a good job overall finishing 14-10.”

Millie Rice led Selkirk against Inchelium with 6 points, including one 3-pointer. Kinley Petrich and Lily Longworth, with one 3-pointer each, added 4 and 3 points. Jessa Culianan and Laylee Strickler added 2 points each, while Chloe Kardos and Lily Smith added 1 point each.

Rice, a sophomore, was named to the Northeast 1B All-League Team for the third time, and Petrich received honorable mention honors.

Seniors Culianan and Marisa Lyons played their last games for Selkirk last week. Both Rangers served as team captains.

“Their leadership, attitude and skill will be missed,” Cain said.
