NEWPORT — The Newport High School girls’ basketball team are out of the District 6 2B tournament after losing to Liberty last week.
Newport (5-17, 3-9) played Liberty from Spangle (13-10, 5-6) Saturday, Feb. 14 at West Valley, losing 43-31.
Liberty outscored Newport 12-2 in the first quarter, further pulling ahead 6-2 in the second quarter and 20-12 in the third quarter. Though Newport managed to outscore Liberty 15-5 in the fourth quarter, Liberty held onto their lead.
Grace Parry led Newport with 15 points. Emma Crabtree and Grace Keck, who both scored a 3-pointer, added 8 and 4 points. Sammi Tellessen added another 4 points.
Lady Spartans out of tournament
PRIEST RIVER — After they were defeated in a loser-out game against Orofino last week, the Priest River Lamanna High School girls’ basketball team is out of the 3A Central Idaho conference tournament.
Priest River (8-10, 2-7) visited Orofino (8-13, 5-4) Thursday, Feb. 12, losing 39-30.
Orofino outscored Priest River 10-1 in the first quarter, according to the Bonner County Daily Bee. Though Priest River caught up 9-11 in the second quarter, the Spartans were trailing 21-10 by intermission. Priest River kept pace with Orofino in the second half, even outscoring Orofino 10-8 in the fourth quarter, but Orofino led until the end of the game.
According to the Bonner County Daily Bee, Aleigha Jensen led Priest River with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. McKinley Burgess-Duquette added 9 points, while Haley Rice added 7 points and another 3-pointer.
Burgess-Duquette led in rebounds and blocks with 12 and two, as well as in assists alongside Haylee Jepson-Church. They had two assists each. Jepson- Church, with 1 point, led in steals with six.
Week seven brings out 27 shooters
NEWPORT – The Newport Gun Club had 27 shooters participate in week seven of the 10-week winter shoot.
