Thank you, voters

Merging fire districts protect fire, EMS services in Pend Oreille County

I want to extend my sincere thanks to the voters of Pend Oreille County for approving the merger between Fire District 2 and Fire District 4. Your support marks a historic and meaningful step forward in guaranteeing the long-term future of fire and EMS services in our communities.

This decision was not simply about combining two agencies—it was about prepaing for the realities facing rural emergency services today. Across the region, we continue to see rising call volumes, increased operational costs, and declining volunteer numbers. These challenges require forward-thinking solutions, and this merger represents exactly that.

It is critically important that fire districts work together—not only in times of emergency, but in preparation for those moments. Emergencies do not wait for convenience, and neither can we. By aligning resources now, we place ourselves in a stronger position to respond effectively when our citizens need us most.

This merger affords us the time, resources, manpower, and operational efficiency necessary to meet both current and future demands. Combining staffing, training, apparatus, and administrative functions reduces overhead while improving service delivery. It allows firefighters and EMS personnel to focus on what matters most—protecting lives and property.

Equally important, this partnership strengthens regional cooperation. When departments train together, plan together, and operate under a unified vision, the entire county benefits. The result is faster response times, deeper staffing on incidents, and more sustainable operations for years to come.

Change can be difficult, but progress requires courage and trust. The voters demonstrated both. Your approval sends a clear message that public safety matters and that you support responsible, proactive planning.

On behalf of the firefighters, EMS providers, and leadership of both districts, thank you for your confidence and your vote. This is the first big step—but an important one—in securing reliable, professional emergency services for Pend Oreille County well into the future.

We look forward to continuing to serve you—together.

ALAN THOMPSON IS THE CHAIRMAN OF THE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT 4 BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS.
