NEWPORT — Two vehicles parked by a home in Newport were shot multiple times overnight this week.

Neighbors of the West Third Street home heard four or five gunshots between 9:30–10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 17, along with yelling.

When resident Preston Kremer, 21, awoke around 5 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, he saw the aftermath: His 2005 Chevy Silverado damaged, with bullet holes and several shattered windows. Later, Kremer found another bullet hole in his cousin’s girlfriend’s 2015 Jeep Renegade, which was parked next to his truck.

“I was pretty upset about it,” Kremer said.

This attack was likely targeted, said Wade Nelson, Newport Police Department chief.

Neighboring security camera footage captured one male running to a spot across the street from Kremer’s home, shooting the two vehicles and running from the scene without stealing anything. At least three shots went into the truck, and one into the car. The gun the shooter used was a 9mm, Kremer said.

“He seemed pretty young,” Kremer said of the shooter. He has seen footage of the shooting. “It's hard to tell because the footage is blurry.”

Kremer, a Newport School District alum who now works from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., went to bed at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17 and was asleep during the shooting. At the time, there was one other adult in the home.

Though there were no injuries or damages to the home, there could have been if the shooter had aimed upward and shot into the living room, Kremer said.

“I’m upset I didn’t wake up,” Kremer said.

Residents who have not been contacted by the Newport Police Department are asked to check their security cameras for footage related to the shooting. With any information, call the Newport Police Department at 509-447-6597.
