OLYMPIA - Lizzie Lyon, a sophomore at Cusick High School, recently spent a week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia.

Lyon was one of 27 students who served as Senate pages for the seventh week of the 2026 legislative session.

She was sponsored by Sen. Shelly Short, R-Addy. She represents the 7th Legislative District, which includes part of Chelan, Douglas and Spokane counties, and all of Ferry, Okanogan, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties.

“Lizzie was a great page to have this week,” said Short. “Her enthusiasm was infectious. We’re always excited to see students like her participate on the floor and help when needed. We hope her time at the Capitol this week was an impactful experience.”

The Senate Page Program provides an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working at the Statehouse. Students transport documents between offices, as well as deliver messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a legislative mock session.

“This program is a great way to get out of your comfort zone,” Lyon said. “There are many unique experiences I will remember that I might not get again, so I’m grateful I was given the chance.”

Lyon, 15, the daughter of Evelyn and Jason Lyon of Usk, enjoys sports including volleyball, basketball and softball. Lyon, who has an interest in civics history, was recommended the Page Program by her history teacher. Favorite parts of her week in Olympia included watching the action on the floor of the Senate chamber and participating in a mock committee, where pages discussed bills and fielded thought-provoking questions from the opposition.

Page applications for the 2027 legislative session open Nov. 1, 2026.
