COLVILLE — The Newport Grizzlies track and field team started their season with a boys’ second place win overall out of 16 schools at the Fischer Jamboree in Colville Friday, March 20. Jonathan Hill won first place in the 400-meter dash with a personal record (PR) of 53.02. Rayben Jurgens won second in shotput at 42 feet 3.5 inches and second in discus with a PR of 133 feet 3 inches. Dax Hansen took third in high jump at 5 inches 6 inches. The boys’ team scored 57.5, finishing just behind Colville, who won the jamboree with a score of 105.5.
For the Lady Grizzlies Aurelia Johnson placed second in high jump at 4 feet 6 inches, Joelle Brandtner won second in triple jump at 30 feet 6.25inches and Olivia Collins finished third in the 1600-meter race with a time of 5:54.14.
The girls’ team placed seventh with an overall score of 35.33. Deer Park placed first in women’s varsity with a score of 82.33.
Hansen and Hailey Davison both achieved a PR. Hansen came in sixth in in the 100-meter with a time of 11.82 and Davison was fourth in the 100-meter at 13.64.
The weather at the event was sunny and windy with gusts and a temperature around 55 - 60 degrees until dark, according to head coach Levi Litowitz.
“It was a great first outing for our athletes, the fact our times were as fast as they were despite the winds are incredible,” Litowitz said in an email to the Miner. “We have some kids that already PRed compared to last season and it shows their commitment to the sport. This is a special and talented group and we were able to see that with this jamboree. We are just getting started and can’t wait for next week.”
Newport travels to the Ezra Gordon Invite at Colville High School Saturday, March 28. The event starts at 9:30 a.m.
