Spartans take first in golf season opener
PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River Lamanna High School golf team placed first at their opening match of the season this week.
Monday, March 23, the Spartans played in the Lapwai Invite at Red Wolf Golf Club in Clarkston, where they placed first.
Nate Fegert led Priest River with a score of 82, followed by Dawson Strange with 90, Madden Redinger with 95, Parker Bradbury with 98 and Mason Crump with 105.
“The boys did great for their first match of the season,” Priest River coach Christopher Martin says.
The Spartans next visit Bryden Canyon in Lewiston.
Play starts at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 26.
Grizzly softball opens with losses
NEWPORT — The Newport High School softball team lost their season opener over the weekend.
Saturday, March 21, the Grizzlies (0-2) visited Lind-Ritzville (4-2) for a doubleheader, losing 11-2 and 7-8.
Both teams were slow to start in game one, with Lind-Ritzville alone scoring runs in the first and third innings.
Then in the fifth and sixth innings, where Newport scored 2 runs total, Lind-Ritzville scored 9.
Newport took an early lead in game two, scoring 3 runs in three innings to Lind-Ritzville’s one.
Lind-Ritzville managed to close the gap in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, scoring 6 runs to Newport’s 4.
Though Newport scored 2 runs in the seventh and final inning, Lind-Ritzville secured their win with just one more run.
In game two, Bella Boyd led Newport with 3 hits.
The Grizzlies visited Northwest Christian in Colbert Tuesday, March 24, after The Miner’s weekly deadline.
They host Northwest Christian over the weekend at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, before hosting Kettle Falls next week at 4 p.m. Tuesday March 31.
Newport soccer loses to Tonasket
NEWPORT — The Grizzly boys’ soccer team hosted Tonasket Saturday, March 21 in Newport’s second game of the spring sports season, losing 5-2.
Earlier in the month the Grizzlies traveled to Warden where they lost to the Cougars, 7-1.
The Grizzlies played at Lakeside Tuesday, March 24 after the newspaper’s deadline.
Results from that game will be in next week’s Miner.
Next up, Newport goes to Medical Lake Thursday, March 26, then hosts Deer Park Monday, March 30. Both games start at 4 p.m.
Panthers off to Colville
CUSICK — Coming up, Cusick track and field travels to Colville for the Ezra Gordon Invite Saturday, March 28. The meet starts at 9:30 a.m.
