SPRINGDALE — Heading into the top of the seventh inning the Selkirk Rangers were up 9-2 against Springdale Saturday, March 28. Then Ranger batters drove in 15 runs to get a 24-4 win.
Zach Vanmeer, Weston Hedrick and Rylan Pichette had five runs apiece. Caden Pichette hit a double, as did Hedrick and Cade Johnson.
Hedrick pitched for the Rangers, relieved by Zach Vanmeer in the seventh inning.
Springdale scored first, with Selkirk scoring 2 runs in the third inning. Springdale tied it in the bottom of the inning. The Rangers took the lead with 3-run fourth and fifth inning and added another run in the sixth before the big final inning.
Wednesday, March 25, the Rangers lost both games of a doubleheader with Wilbur-Creston- Keller 16-6 and 12-1.
The Rangers had a doubleheader with Curlew Tuesday, March 31.
Grizzly soccer busy
NEWPORT — The Grizzly boys’ soccer team had a rough and tumble week of competition, losing a home game to Clarkston, 4-2, Friday, March 27, and an away game to Medical Lake, 3-2, Thursday, March 26.
“We played well and are starting to come together better as a team,” coach Nick Tucker said.
A freshman, Kyler Wright, earned the title man of the match versus Medical Lake in his first start at defensive midfield. Newport’s senior keeper, Jack Youk, earned it in the game against Clarkston as he scored a goal from the field in the first half and saved 20 shots on goal in the second half.
The Grizzlies lost a nonleague game to Deer Park, 7-3 at home Monday, March 30. Newport hosted Northwest Christian March 31.
Panthers get close wins
CURLEW — The Cusick Panthers baseball team trailed Curlew 2-0 for the first four innings of their first doubleheader game Saturday, March 28. Then Panther hitters started connecting, scoring six runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and adding to it with another in the sixth. Curlew answered with a three-run sixth inning, but couldn’t follow up in the seventh and Cusick won the Northeast 1B League North game 7-5.
Daniel Lyon hit a double. The second game was a slugfest, with Cusick getting a 20-18 win. Curlew had a four-run lead heading into the fifth inning, when Cusick scored five runs. Curlew scored again in the bottom of the inning and the game was tied 15-15 after five innings. Curlew got the lead back with a three-run sixth inning, but Cusick scored five runs in the last inning to take the win.
Lyon went 4-for-4 at bat. Judah Sutton, Thomas Sullivan and Charles Whitfors- Renaud each got 2 hits.
The Panthers played Republic Tuesday, March 31. They host Oroville Friday, April 3 for a doubleheader, with the first game starting at noon.
