LEWISTON — At their first match of the season last week, Newport High School golf team players qualified not just for varsity, but also for the district tournament.
Six boys and one girl visited Bryden Canyon Golf Club in Lewiston for a tournament Tuesday, March 24.
“It was a very fun day for golf,” Newport coach Jake Wiltfong said.
This year, Wiltfong says the team determined varsity players by a league-defined scoring system where players must shoot under a scoring max to compete in varsity matches. For boys, the scoring max is 116 strokes, while for girls it is 128.
Out of those who played in yesterday’s tournament, five boys and the one girl scored below the varsity threshold. They were Ayecen McLeslie, 90, Noah Erickson, 96, Carsen Hirst, 112, Dylan Taxter, 113, Mason Hirst, 115 and Trinity Graham, 119.
Additionally, McLeslie, Erickson and Graham qualified for the district tournament, the scoring maxes for that being 108 for boys and 122 for girls.
“I am pleased that we had two boys and our one girl qualify for that tournament as well yesterday,” Wiltfong said.
The Grizzlies visited Dominion Meadows Golf Club in Colville for another match Tuesday, March 31 after The Miner’s weekly deadline. They next visit Chewelah Golf Club at noon Tuesday, April 14.
