NEWPORT — Two local figures are hosting Newport’s second town hall this month.

Marianne Nichols, Pend Oreille County auditor, and Michelle Nedved, publisher of The Miner Newspapers are leading the town hall at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11 in the Public Utility District conference room. The PUD conference room is accessible from a side door on Pine Street.

Nichols’ topic is “Our Free and Fair Elections.” She will walk through the voting process in Washington state and explain the checks and balances that protect every ballot. Washington has used a vote-by-mail system successfully for many years.

The Newport Miner has been in operation for 125 years, though the way people consume news has changed drastically in the last 20. Therefore, Nedved’s topic is “Independent Newspapers,” and she and her staff will discuss why journalism is more important now than ever, how they are staying relevant and what the future of community journalism looks like.

Nichols and Nedved will answer written questions from community members.

Alzheimer’s caregiving workshops

NEWPORT — The Pend Oreille County Library District will host a series of Friday workshops at the Newport Library focused on caregiving for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Titled “The Empowered Caregiver,” the sessions will be led by experts from the Alzheimer’s Association.

Each session will explore a different aspect of caregiving, beginning with the foundations of care and progressing through topics such as supporting independence, effective communication, and responding to common behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s.

Workshops will be held on Fridays from April 3 through May 1, with each session beginning at 11a.m. A full list of topics is available on the library’s event calendar at pocld.org/event-directory.
