NEWPORT — The Grizzly Discovery Center hosted Jake Osborn from the FIRST youth robotics community, along with a youth robotics team from the Saint George’s independent school in Spokane on Wednesday, April 1.
They presented and demonstrated some of the robotics programs offered by FIRST, which stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The mission of FIRST is to provide life-changing robotics programs that give young people the skills, confidence and resilience to build a better world. FIRST core values include discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork and fun. Anyone interested in learning more about FIRST robotics can check out this link www.firstwa.org/, or attend the upcoming FIRST Robotics Competition PNW District Championships this week on April 9, 10, and 11 at Eastern Washington University, 526-5th Street in Cheney. Interested youths need not have prior experience with robots.

Breakfast fundraiser with SPOFR Auxiliary
NEWPORT — The South Pend Oreille Fire and Rescue Auxiliary hosts their annual breakfast fundraiser from 7–11 a.m. Saturday, April 11 at Station 34 at Jermain Road and Fertile Valley Road. There will be pancakes, breakfast burritos, biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns, bacon, coffee, juice, milk and tea. Cost is $7 per person. Proceeds benefit SPOFR volunteers. CUSICK — The Pend Oreille Conservation District is hosting a free educational workshop, “Plan, Plant, Protect: Riparian Restoration,” at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 11 at the Camas Center. Participants will learn riparian permitting requirements and project planning, site preparation and planting techniques, species selection for success, long-term maintenance and protection strategies and cost-share and technical assistance opportunities. Free bear awareness training
USK — A free bear awareness training is Saturday, April 18, 10 a.m. at the Usk Community Hall. The event is sponsored by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Pend Oreille County Library District, and the Kalispel Tribe of Indians. Participants will learn about bear biology and how to avoid bear conflicts in the woods and around the home. There will also be training on how to properly use bear spray.
