NEWPORT — The Newport High School softball team won three times against Kettle Falls last week.
Newport (4-4, 4-2) hosted Kettle Falls (2-5, 2-4) Tuesday, March 31, winning 16-5 in five innings.
The Grizzlies took a 3-1 lead in the first inning. They continued to expand that lead with runs in the second and third innings and securing their first win after scoring again in the fourth.
Bella Boyd led Newport with 4 runs and 3 RBIs. Grace Parry added 4 RBIs.
They next visited Kettle Falls Saturday, April 4 for a doubleheader.
“We had two good games against Kettle Falls on Saturday,” Newport coach Steve Braun says, wining the first game 14-2 and the second 18-9.
Newport took an even earlier lead in game one, 10-0 in the first inning, followed by 2 runs in the second inning and 1 run in both the third and fifth innings. Though Kettle Falls managed to score runs against the Grizzlies in the third and fourth innings, the two scores weren’t enough for them to catch up.
Parry led Newport that afternoon, Braun says, driving in 4 runs on three hits. Boyd added two hits, including a double and 2 RBIs.
The Grizzlies had a slow start game two, allowing Kettle Falls to score 1-0 and 7-5 in the first and third innings. Newport made a comeback in the fourth inning, scoring 5-0 and tipping the points 10-8 toward the Grizzlies. Kettle Falls kept pace 1-1 in the fifth inning, but fell behind 1-0 and 6-0 in the sixth and seventh innings, giving Newport their third win in a row last week.
Boyd led Newport that evening, Braun says, driving in 7 runs on three hits. In the third inning, Boyd hit a grand slam homerun to center field and scored 4 runs.
Parry added four hits, Julie Bowman and Lilli Hall two each. Bowman and Hall also added 3 and 4 RBIs.
“The team hit well overall,” Braun says. “We had 16 hits in all.”
The Grizzlies hosted Riverside and cross-border rival Priest River Tuesday, April 7 after The Miner’s weekly deadline. They next visit Davenport at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14.
