KETTLE FALLS – The Newport Grizzlies baseball team lost a close first game 8-7 in a Northeast 2B North league doubleheader at Kettle Falls Friday, April 3 before getting a solid 6-1 win the second game.
The Grizzlies were up 7-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when Kettle Falls came up with four runs to win. Newport’s Landon Hall, Landon Durant, Jordan Baumbach and Kole Keogh hit doubles in the first game. Newport had 13 hits in the game.
In the second game, Kettle Falls scored their only run in the first inning, with Newport coming back in the top of the second with a run and went ahead in the fourth inning with three runs. A two run seventh inning put the cap on the game. Newport batters got five hits.
Brad Martin, who pitched the first six innings, got a hit, as did Durant and Nathaniel Shaw. Gavin Estrada- Hunt got a pair of hits.
The Tuesday before, March 31, Kettle Falls visited Newport, where they got a 4-2 win. The game was competitive, with the teams tied going into the fifth inning, where Kettle Falls scored a run and extended the lead in the seventh with another run.
Hill accounted for most of Newport’s five hits in that game, going 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Newport (3-5, 1-5) played Priest River (5-0) and Riverside (1-2) at home Tuesday after the newspaper’s deadline. The Grizzlies go to Davenport Tuesday, April 14 for a game that starts at 4:30 p.m.
