Spartan softball searching for win

PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River Lamanna High School softball team is still searching for a win after losing five more times in the last week.

Tuesday, April 7, the Spartans (1-11, 0-7) played Riverside (2-4, 0-0) and cross-border rival Newport (4-4, 4-2) in a triple hosted by the Grizzlies. They lost to Riverside 16-4.

Priest River kept pace with Riverside in the first inning, scoring 2 runs to Riverside’s 3. But the Spartans lost their chance to outpace their opponents in the second and third innings, when Riverside scored a total of 13 runs. Between the fourth and fifth innings, Priest River only scored 2 more runs.

Rylee Dixon led Priest River with 2 runs, followed by Karlie Olmo and Abi Sparrow-Lovette with 1 each. McKinley Burgess-Duquette, Abagail Shaulis and Haylee Jepson each had 1 RBI, and Burgess-Duquette, Eila Smith, Jepson and Sparrow- Lovette each had one hit.

Next up was Newport, who won 23-13. (See Booster for more.)

The Grizzlies took an early 6-run lead against the Spartans in the first and second innings. Despite that, Priest River made a comeback mid-game, scoring 8 runs to Newport’s 9 in the third inning and outscoring Newport 5 runs to 4 in the fourth inning. But the Spartans never managed to catch up in the fifth inning, when scored another 4 runs and secured the win.

Smith, Heather Stumm, Maycie Olmo, Sparrow-Lovette and Courtney Whitaker each scored 2 runs. Dixon led in RBIs with 3, followed by Burgess-Duquette and Stumm with 2 each. Stumm and Dixon added two hits each.

Friday, April 10 at home, Priest River lost to Orofino (8-0, 6-0) 19-1. First in the 3A Central Idaho league, Orofino has stood undefeated since the start of the season.

Though the Spartans managed to score 1 run in the first inning, Orofino scored 6, then continued to outscore Priest River through the fifth inning.

Dixon led Priest River again with 1 run. Burgess- Duquette had 1 RBI, and Dixon, Burgess- Duquette and Jepson each had one hit.

They played Orofino again in a doubleheader Saturday, April 11 at home, losing game one 14-1 and game two 18-0.

Game one, Priest River scored 1 run in the first inning while Orofino scored 6. Neither team scored again until the fourth and fifth innings, when Orofino scored a total of 8 runs. Orofino continued to outscore through the fourth inning of game two, though neither team scored in the fifth inning.

Leading Priest River in game one was Dixon with 1 run. Smith had 1 RBI. Sparrow-Lovette had two hits, while Maycie Olmo had one. Stumm and Burgess- Duquette each had one hit in game two.

The Spartans next visit Kellogg for a doubleheader Friday, April 17, with game one at 2 p.m. and game two at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, they host Kellogg for another doubleheader; games one and two are at the same times.
