NEWPORT – The Newport Grizzlies baseball team took on Davenport three times last week, winning two of the games.
Newport batters had their way with Davenport in the first game Wednesday, April 15, at Davenport. Newport won 18-9. Davenport led 5-0 as Newport headed into the top of the third inning, where they scored six runs to take the lead, which they never gave up. Kole Keogh had a hot bat, getting four hits, including two doubles. Carter Brandtner also hit a double. Kutter Driver got three hits, including a triple.
Brandtner also got the win as pitcher in the Northeast 2B North league game.
Saturday, April 18 at Newport, the Grizzlies got a 12-2 five-inning win behind the pitching of Gavin Estrada-Hunt. Spayne Driver hit at triple for Newport and Martin and Keogh hit doubles.
In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Davenport got a 13-9 win.
Jordan Baumbach, Estrada-Hunt and Keogh all hit doubles. They each had three hits.
Newport (6-7, 3-6) currently is in third place in the League, behind Northwest Christian (10-2, 6-1) and Chewelah (12-2, 9-0) and ahead of Reardan (2-10, 2-4), Kettle Falls (3-9, 2-6) and Davenport (2-7, 2-7).
Newport goes to Reardan Saturday, April 25 for a doubleheader, with the first game starting at noon. They are then on to Jenkins Junior/Senior High School in Chewelah for a game Tuesday, April 28 that starts at 4 p.m.
