NEWPORT – The Newport tennis team hosted Freeman Wednesday, April 15, with Freeman getting the 3-2 girls win despite Newport’s two doubles team winning their matches.
Newport coach Brandon McDaniel says it was like the previous time Newport played Freeman. Freeman has good singles players, especially their No. 1 singles player, Avery Boswell, who defeated Newport’s Carmin Taxter 6-0, 6-0. McDaniel says Boswell is one of the top three players in the league.
“However, Camrin came out swinging against her and I saw her connect a few dots in her game,” he says.
Newport’s Maria Swiatkowska lost 6-0, 6-1 to Maris Vernon and Chloe Slinger lost 6-1, 6-0 to Ava Aylard.
Newport’s doubles teams handily won their matches, with Marrisa Dahl and Emmalee Doughty winning their match 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles and Evelyn Sears and Allie Erickson won their match at No. 2 doubles but had to go to the tiebreaker to do so.
“Emmalee and Marisa played extremely aggressive in their first set coming away with a 6-3 win, but at the turn I could tell they were forcing a few that they just needed to let play out and when they did that, they really came alive for that 6-0 second set win,” McDaniel says. “Allie and Evelyn played their strongest opponents to date and still remain undefeated.”
They won the first set 6-4, dropped the second 7-5 and won the tiebreak, which they won 11-9.
“Their positioning and understanding is great to see, we just need a couple of tweaks and they should be able to jump to a whole new level of play,” he says. “I think we will see it this year.”
On the boys’ side, Vance Vooge won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Newport boys forfeited No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The No. 1 boys’ doubles team of Marcus Will and DJ Atkins won their match 6-0, 6-0.
“Vance is playing strong right now and I am very interested to see how he matches up with St. George’s next week,” McDaniel says.
Newport next plays Wednesday, April 22 against Reardan/Davenport at Davenport. The Inland Empire Tournament starts Friday, April 24 at various locations in and around Spokane and continues Saturday. Monday, April 27 Newport hosts St. George’s at 3 p.m.
