Cusick baseball leads league

CUSICK – The Cusick Panthers baseball team (73, 7-1) sits solidly atop the Northeast 1B North league following a pair of league wins at home against Republic Tuesday, April 14.

Cusick won the first game of the doubleheader 12-2 in five innings. Kaden Person went 2 for 3 at bat and pitched the game, relieved by Dan Lyon in the fifth inning.

Lyon got a pair of hits in that game, as did Nick Sandwick.

The Panthers won the second game 15-4 in three innings. The Panthers scored 13 runs in the first inning. Person went 2-for-2 at bat.

Selkirk (6-5, 4-3) is in second place in the league, Curlew (3-6, 3-5) in third and Republic (2-9, 1-4) in fourth.

Friday, April 17, the Panthers lost 15-3 to Okanogan in a nonleague game.

Cusick next hosts Curlew Saturday, April 25 for a doubleheader, with the first game starting at noon. Tuesday, April 28, the Panthers are home again against Selkirk for a doubleheader, with the first game at 2 p.m.

Grizzly soccer has busy week

NEWPORT – The Newport boys’ soccer team fought it out in three games last week against Clarkston, Lakeside and Colville. In an away game against Clarkston Friday, April 17, the Bantams (6-31) scored three goals apiece and shut out the visiting Newport Grizzlies (1-10) in a nonleague match. Newport’s four goalkeepers, Noah Crabtree, Reiner Dominguez, Jack Youk and Gryphen Bilaski, recorded 22 saves between them.

Lakeside traveled to Newport Thursday, April 16 for a non-league game. The visiting Eagles (6-2-2) defeated the Grizzlies 8-1.

Newport hosted Colville and suffered a 5-2 loss Tuesday, April 14.

Newport hosted Medical Lake April 21 after deadline. The Grizzlies travel to Northwest Christian Thursday, April 23. The game starts at 4 p.m. Riverside comes to Newport for a game Tuesday, April 28 at 6 p.m.

Rangers split with Curlew

IONE – The Selkirk Rangers baseball team saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to the Curlew Cougars in the second game of a doubleheader at Curlew Tuesday, April 14. The Rangers won the first game 17-4. Curlew bounced back taking the second game 12-2. Prior to the loss that Tuesday, the Rangers had won a game against Curlew, two against Republic and Curlew again.

Selkirk (6-5, 4-3) is in second place in the Northeast 1B North league, behind Cusick (7-4, 7-1). Curlew (3-6, 3-5) is in third and Republic (2-9, 1-4) is in fourth.

Selkirk went to Republic Tuesday, April 21 for a doubleheader. The Rangers are at home Saturday, April 25 for a doubleheader with Oroville, with the first game starting at noon. Tuesday, April 28, the Rangers play a doubleheader at Cusick with the first game starting at 2 p.m.
