NEWPORT — The Newport High School softball team defeated Davenport in three straight games last week, hitting a fourgame win streak.
Tuesday, April 14, Newport (8-5, 7-2) visited Davenport (2-9, 2-7), winning 24-2.
“We had another good game,” Newport coach Steve Braun says.
Newport took an early 2-run lead in the first inning, with Davenport only scoring 1 run. The Grizzlies only widened their lead in the second, third and fourth innings with 15 more runs. Though Davenport managed to score another run in the fifth inning, Newport outscored them with 7 runs.
Grace Parry led Newport, batting 5-for-5 with 3 runs and 7 RBIs. Makayla Peone and Cheyanne Frisk followed with three and four hits, respectively, in addition to 4 RBIs each. Jasmine Billiter added 3 RBIs and three hits, Bella Boyd 2 RBIs and three hits.
“It was a very cold, rainy and windy day, but we kept our bats rolling,” Braun says.
Saturday, April 18, Newport hosted Davenport for a doubleheader, winning game one 16-4 and game two 17-3.
Newport took an even earlier lead in game one. Between the first and second innings, Newport scored 11 runs, while Davenport only scored 1. Davenport made a 3-run comeback in the third inning, outscoring Newport’s 2 runs, but it didn’t last into the fourth inning, where Newport scored another 3 runs.
Lilli Hall led Newport, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and three hits. Parry had 1 RBI and three hits, Boyd 2 RBIs and two hits, Billiter 2 RBIs and Genica Kreider two hits.
Game two, Newport took another early 2-run lead in the first inning. Davenport scored all 3 of their runs that game in the second inning, but Newport still outscored them with 8 runs. The Grizzlies added a total of 7 runs to their score in the third and fourth innings.
Parry led Newport again, going 2-for-3 with a home run to center field and 5 RBIs on just two hits.
Boyd followed with 3 RBIs and one hit. Julie Bowman struck out 10 batters and added two hits.
“They all played well,” Braun says. They next hosted Reardan Tuesday, April 21 after The Miner’s weekly deadline.
Saturday, April 25, Newport visits Reardan for a doubleheader, with game one at noon and game two at 2 p.m. Next week, Newport visits Jenkins in Chewelah at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 28.
