NEWPORT — After two more wins last week, the Newport High School softball team’s six-game winning streak broke.
Tuesday, April 21, Newport (10-6, 9-3) played Reardan (6-9, 6-3) at home, winning 12-3. In the first inning, Newport scored 5 runs for an early lead against Reardan, who only scored 2 runs.
The Grizzlies continued to outscore Reardan in the second and third innings, hitting a total of 6 runs.
Though Reardan managed to outscore Newport in the fifth inning with 1 run, Newport outscored Reardan again in the sixth inning with 1 run.
Saturday, April 25, Newport visited Reardan for a doubleheader, winning game one 14-11 but losing game two 11-1.
Early into game one, Reardan took the lead, scoring a total of 4 runs between the first and second innings. Newport made a comeback in the fourth inning, scoring 7 runs while Reardan scored 2 runs, then picked up another run in the fifth inning. Reardan caught up in the sixth inning with 3 runs. Newport hit 1 run, and the teams went into extra innings after they both scored 2 runs in the seventh inning. In the eighth inning, Newport outscored Reardan with 3 runs.
Early into game two, Reardan took the lead again, scoring 2 runs in the first inning before scoring another 6 in the third inning. Newport scored 1 run in the fourth inning, but it was not enough to catch up to Reardan, who scored 2.
Reardan then picked up 1 run in the fifth inning.
The Grizzlies visited Jenkins in Chewelah Tuesday, April 28, then host Jenkins for a doubleheader Friday, May 1, with game one at 2 p.m. and two at 4 p.m. Next week, the Grizzlies host Freeman at 4:30 p.m.
