REARDAN – Newport split a key doubleheader with Reardan on the road last Saturday, winning the first game 16-4 and dropping the second 5-2.
Newport coach Thad Trepanier says winning both games would have guaranteed a playoff spot. Newport (8-8, 5-7) is currently in fourth place in the Northeast 2B North conference, behind Kettle Falls (6-10, 5-6), Northwest Christian (12-3, 8-2) and Chewelah (13-4, 10-2).
“Overall, I thought the boys played well and put us in good spot as far as making the playoffs go heading into this last week of the regular season by at least winning the first game,” Trepanier says. The Grizzlies played Reardan three times last week, winning the first game, 7-3, Tuesday, April 21.
Brad Martin went 2-for-3 at bat, hitting a double. Carter Brandtner also hit a double. Gavin Estrada-Hunt pitched the win.
Newport played Reardan again Saturday, April 25 winning 16-4 behind in the first game of the doubleheader. Newport scored 16 runs on 10 hits. Reardan’s nine errors contributed to the Newport win. Newport had two errors.
Newport lost the second game 5-2. The Grizzlies only had two hits.
Now the games between Kettle Falls and Reardan make a big difference to Newport’s playoff chances. Newport played Chewelah Tuesday, April 28. They play a doubleheader against Chewelah Friday, May 1 with the first game starting at 2 p.m.
