NEWPORT — Grace Newlun is the Soroptimist International of Newport Club’s Girl of The Month for April.
Newlun plans on attending Washington State University in the fall to study psychology.
She’s been awarded their Regent Scholarship for merit, named a Top Scholar and admitted to their honors college. She is also a Spokane Scholar for English and she is Washington’s candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
Throughout high school, she’s explored her interests in English, history and welding. Newlun helped restart Newport’s SkillsUSA Chapter, becoming president of the organization. Last year, she competed at the State Championship in welding sculpture and placed second. This year, she competes at State in the same event.
“I couldn’t have gotten where I am today without the people around me,” Newlun said. “Newport has been such a wonderful environment that has allowed me to learn and grow, not only as a student, but as a person. I am so grateful for all my teachers who have guided me through the difficult and stressful parts of high school and helped me succeed. As I move into the next part of my life, I will miss the community here, my peers and all the friends I’ve made, but I know we all have great things ahead of us.”
