Pend Oreille candidate filing approaches

NEWPORT — In addition to those at the federal and state levels, positions across the county are up for election this year in Pend Oreille County, with the primary election set for Tuesday, Aug. 4.

In Washington, candidates for all federal, state and county offices have from Monday, May 4 to Friday, May 8 to file. Candidates for county offices must be registered to vote and live in their district.

For the Pend Oreille County Board of County Commissioners, the District 2 Commissioner position is up for election. This position is held by Robert Rosencrantz.

A position is up for election at the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office: Sheriff, held by Glenn Blakeslee.

District Court Judge Robin Mc-Croskey and Prosecuting Attorney Dolly Hunt’s positions are also up for election.

Positions are up for election at other county departments. These include positions currently held by Assessor James McCroskey, Auditor Marianne Nichols, Clerk Tammie Ownbey and Treasurer Nicole Dice.

All county elected officials have four-year terms.

For the Public Utility District Board of Commissioners, the District 2 Commissioner position is up for election. This position, which has a six-year term, is held by Curt Knapp.

At the state and federal levels, several elected officials’ terms are expiring next year.

U.S. Rep. Michael Baumgartner of District 5, which partially encompasses Pend Oreille County, is up for reelection.

State Reps. David Engell and Hunter Abell are up for reelection for Positions 1 and 2 of District 7, which partially encompasses Pend Oreille County. Shelly Short is up for reelection as Senator of District 7.

Justice Positions 1, 3, 4, 5 and 7 are up for election at the Washington State Supreme Court.

For District 1 of the Court of Appeals Division III, which includes Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens, Lincoln, Ferry and Okanogan Counties, Judge Position 2 is up for reelection. Meanwhile, Judge Position 2 is up for election at Ferry, Pend Oreille and Stevens Superior Court.
