NEWPORT — The Newport Grizzlies baseball team won their first game of the week 1-0 at Chewelah Tuesday, April 28 but couldn’t repeat in the doubleheader at Newport Friday, May 1, losing the first game 16-5 and the second game 11-3.
Gavin Estrade-Hunt and Kole Keogh hit doubles in Tuesday’s game, with Brad Martin and Kutter Driver also getting hits. Martin pitched for Newport. The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Martin drove in what turned out to be the winning run.
Friday, Chewelah had a big 6-run second inning to break a 1-1 tie. They held the lead the rest of the way, closing the game out with another 6-run sixth inning to tale the 16-5 win. Keogh hit a double and triple for Newport and drove in two runs. Carter Brandtner hit a double. Five errors cost the Grizzlies in the second game. The teams were tied 2-2 after the opening inning, but Newport didn’t score again until the seventh. Estrada-Hunt got a pair of hits.
Newport (9-10, 6-9) is in fourth place in the Northeast 2B North League. Northwest Christian (153, 11-2) is in first place, Chewelah (15-5, 12-3) is second, Kettle Falls (7-12, 6-8) is third and Reardan (5-13, 5-7) is fourth. Davenport (2-13, 2-13) is sixth. Newport has a play-in game for districts at home Thursday, May 7 against Freeman. Freeman (8-11, 6-6) is the number three team in the Northeast 2B South conference. The game will be played at Chewelah’s Jenkin’s High School at 2 p.m. The winner will play Chewelah that same day at 4:30 p.m. Two teams from districts will go to state from the single elimination tourney.
Cusick on to districts
CUSICK — The Cusick Panthers won both games of a doubleheader with Selkirk at home Tuesday, April 27. The Panthers won the first game 12-4 and the second 11-6. Daniel Lyon led Cusick batters in game one with three hits, including two doubles. Charles Whitford-Renaud also hit a double in that game, as did Daniel Lyon. Kaden Person was credited with the win. Details of the second game were unavailable. The win put Cusick in a game with Waterville-Mansfield Tuesday, May 5 at Chewelah. Win or lose, Cusick moves on to the districts; win, the Panthers play the winner of the Oroville-Almira/ Couelee-Hartline game for the championship. The loss put Selkirk in a mustwin game Tuesday with Wilbur-Creston-Keller. That winner takes fifth and moves on to districts.
Grizzlies lose to Colville
NEPWORT — A 4-2 loss to Colville didn’t dampen spirits at Senior Night for the Newport High School boys’ soccer team at a home game Thursday, April 30. The Grizzlies faced Colville again Tuesday, May 5 after the Miner’s deadline.
