Grizzlies win top spots at league meet

NEWPORT — The Newport High School track and field team made a good showing at the NE2B League meet at Liberty High School Saturday, May 2.

“Our distance runners on the whole had a great day, as did our relays,” coach Levi Litowitz said. “This being the last regular season league meet, we got out of it healthy and with some amazing PR’s so that is a victory for us.”

Individual placing athletes for the Grizzly boys included Jonathan Hill winning second in the 400-meter with a personal record (PR) 51.56; Malik Kennett in third in 110-meter hurdles at 19.23; Damien Hamberg won first in shot put throwing 42 feet, 4 inches, second in discus at 128 feet, 6 inches; Rayben Jurgens won first in discus with 131 feet, 2 inches; Lucas Croswhite won first in javelin, throwing 133 feet, second in long jump at 18 feet, 10 inches (PR); Dax Hansen won first in triple jump at 39 feet, 5 inches; and the 4x400 relay team won first at 3:33.8 (Lucas Croshwite, Jonathan Hill, Dax Hansen, Tanner Rheinford).

For the girls, Olivia Collins won first in the 3200-meter at 12:25.66, third in the 1600-meter at 5:53.7; Aimee Busby was second in 3200-meter at 12:43.84 (PR); Savannah Garris won third in shot put at 28 feet (PR); Joelle Brandtner won second in the triple jump 33’ 7”, and the 4x100 relay came in second at 54.26 (Hailey Davison, Joelle Brandtner, Allysah Bays, Savannah Garris); the 4x200 relay team placed second at 1:56.59 (Joelle Brandtner, Hailey Davison, Allysah Bays, Savannah Garris); and the 4x400 relay team was third at 4:45.87 (Aimee Busby, Olivia Collins, Sophia Peaker, Aurelia Johnson).

There were seven schools that competed at the meet, with Newport boys placing second overall with a score of 92 and the girls placing fourth with 76.

The Grizzlies attended the NE2B League Championships Tuesday after the Miner’s deadline.
