Spartan track and field takes top spots in Districts

ST. MARIES — Priest River Lamanna High track and field had a strong showing at the District 1/2 3A Championships May 8-9, with Daniel Gunkle winning second in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:13.43, which was a personal best (PB). Gunnar Pettit winning third in the 400-meter race with a time of 53.52. Peyton Whitehead followed in fourth place with a PB of 55.26 and Landon Blackburn having a seasonal best (SB) of 59.01, earning him sixth. Ian Lamanna finishing fourth in the 100-meter race with a time of 11.55. He went on to place fourth in the 200-meter at 24.47. Gunkle came back to win fourth place in the 1600-meter race at 5:12.23 and third in the 3200-meter at 11:04.86.

The boys’ 1600-meter team of Blackburn, Pettit, Gunkle and Whitehead won second place, clocking in at 3:59.42.

In hurling events, Lamanna won first place in javelin, throwing 13-feet. Pettit waws fourth with a PB of 11-feet, 3-inches. Niki Porinchok won second in shot put with a PB of 47feet, 5-inches. Tanner Hughes cracked the top 10, winning ninth place with 35-feet, 9-inches. Porinchok came back to win first place in discus, throwing 158-feet, 7-inches. Hughes had a PB, earning him eighth place with 111-feet, 2-inches. Lamanna placed third in the long jump, reaching 19-feet, 10.5-inches. Pettit was right behind him in fourth place with a PB of 19-feet, 5.25-inches.

For the Lady Spartans Ashlyn Korff won first place in long jump with 14-feet, 1.5-inches. She was fourth in the 100-meter with a PB of 13.66. She went on to win second in triple jump, reaching 29-feet, 7-inches and a PB. Haylee Jepson was sixth with a PB of 14.01 and Rachel Roberts was seventh with a PB of 14.07. Korff also placed fourth in the 200-meter with a PB of 28.80. Roberts followed up in seventh place with a PB of 29.73. Jepson took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 19.14. She won third in the 300-meter hurdles with a PB of 53.99.

Farrah Hollett placed fifth in shot put, throwing 26-feet, 2.5-inches. Averii Meek took fourth place in discus with 820feet, 2-inches. Trinity Meyers won sixth, throwing 76-feet, 9-inches. Hollett followed up in seventh at a distance of 71-feet, 10-inches. Jepson had a PB in javelin, throwing 79-feet and earning third place.

The Spartans are headed to the IHSAA 4A/3A/2A Track and Field Championships in Middleton Friday-Saturday, May 15-16.
