NEWPORT — Sravasti Abbey is hosting numerous events this summer.
Sharing the Dharma Day is a monthly event, happening from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 7, July 19 and August 9. This day-long event is for newcomers and returning guests to explore Buddha’s teachings and includes a guided meditation, teaching on the daily topic, vegetarian potluck and facilitated discussion. Topics come from the book “Working with Anger” by Ven. Thubten Chodron, Sravasti Abbey founder and abbess.
All are welcome, no experience required.
Young Adults Explore Buddhism is from Friday, June 12 to Thursday, June 18. This is a week-long residential course with Ven.
Thubten Chodron for young people aged 18 to 29. The course includes meditation instruction and practice, teaching discussions on current issues and outdoor work in acres of forest.
The entire course, including meals and lodging, is offered on a donation basis.
The Good Karma Memorial Day Retreat is from Friday, May 22 to Monday, May 25. Ven. Thubten Chodron continues a series of teachings based on her book “Good Karma: How to Create the Causes of Happiness and Avoid the Causes of Suffering,” a commentary on “The Wheel of Sharp Weapons” by Indian sage Dharmarakshita.
In the Presence of the Tathagata is from Wednesday, May 27 to Sunday, May 31. Sravasti Abbey and 84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha for the opportunity to add your voice to a chorus of monastic and lay reciters in the first-ever English reading of the newly translated “Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines Sutra,” which has been revered as the most accurate expression of the Buddha’s teaching on the perfection of wisdom for more than two millennia. The sutra will be read aloud in unison in three two-hour sessions daily. The entire resounding will also be livestreamed on YouTube, with a scrolling text so you can recite along from anywhere in the world.
Monastics and lay reciters are welcomed.
Jowo Atisha’s Lamp for the Path is from Friday, July 3 to Thursday, July 9. Geshe Gendun Samdup, a Dharma teacher and personal attendant to Serkong Rinpoche, will visit to continue teaching Jowo Atisha’s “Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment.” Watch the first set of teachings, given in 2025, on YouTube @sravastiabbey. “Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment” is a short text by Atisha, a great Indian Master who revived Buddhism in Tibet in the 11th century. In 68 pithy verses, it outlines the practices that culminate in full awakening. Je Tsongkhapa praises this text and its author as the source of his Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path (Lamrim Chenmo), which is practiced in the lineage of the Dalai Lama and at the Abbey.
Teachings will take place once or twice daily. Attendees may spend the week in residence with the Abbey or join as a commuter.
