Weed Board involved in upcoming events

NEWPORT — The Pend Oreille County Noxious Weed Board is involved in a series of events this and next month.

Pay, Clean, Go Awareness Week runs through Saturday, June 13. The board and the North American Invasive Species Management Association invite outdoor enthusiasts, land managers, recreation partners and communities to take part in this annual event, which empowers everyone to take simple yet effective actions to prevent the spread of invasive species and protect local environments.

A Weed Walk with the county Master Gardeners is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 13.

South county participants meet at 8:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the Washington State University Extension Office to receive maps, review the day’s route and organize carpooling. All other attendees should plan to meet at the first stop, Sweet Creek County Park, at 9 a.m., where board staff will lead a guided walk focused on identifying native plants and discussing bagged noxious weeds.

Following the park tour, Tom Pulford of the board will lead the attendees to explore a variety of native trees, shrubs and understory plants unique to the intermountain West.

This walk is free and open to all, though attendees must provide their own transportation. Four-wheel or allwheel- drive vehicles are required for the upper elevation portions of the tour. Bring a sack lunch, water, mosquito protection, sunscreen, hiking shoes and binoculars.

The Mill Pond Dam Removal - Reviewing Restoration Webinar is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18.

Join the northeast chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society and Kris Lepine from Seattle City Light to learn about the Mill Pond Dam removal. Learn about why the dam was deconstructed and the role that native plants are playing in ecological restoration efforts. Forestland Grazing and Silvopasture Field Day with the Conservation District is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, June 19.

Explore forage and planting tips from Rainer Seeds, rangeland management from the Natural Resources Conservation Service, equipment demonstration and Silvopasture management. Register at the link pocd.org/ forestland-grazing-silvopasture-program.

A Mill Pound Site Field Trip is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, June 26.

Join the northeast chapter of the Washington Native Plant society and Seattle City Light on a field trip to the area of Washington that stays lusher late in the season, with lots of interesting habitat.

Pend Oreille County America’s 250th Celebration is from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 30 at the Old County Courthouse. Activities include a Declaration of Independence reading, tree dedication, music, refreshments and museum exhibits, with participation by Daughters of the American Revolution.

Aquatic Life and Property Management is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, July 10 at the Camas Center for Community Wellness.

Under discussion will be tools and methods, shoreline healthcare, impacts and projects and aquatic life identification, featuring expert speakers and door prizes. There is an optional lunch for $10.
