Community collaborating to host Spokane Symphony
NEWPORT — Through a collaboration between the Newport Creative District, Newport School District, Pend Oreille County Library District, Create Arts Center and other community partners, the Spokane Symphony may play in Newport next year.
“For many of our students, this will be their first experience hearing professional orchestra musicians,” a member of the planning committee said in a Creative District news release. “It’s a moment that can spark curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of music.”
The proposal includes two components. The first centers on education, offering interactive classroom instruction or a school assembly introducing students to live orchestral music and deepening their appreciation for the arts. The Newport School District is assuming responsibility for funding this portion of the project. The second is a full symphony orchestra concert, open to the entire community — an opportunity for Newport residents of all ages to experience a live orchestral performance close to home. The estimated cost for this portion of the project is $25,000; the planning committee is working to secure funding by Tuesday, Sept. 15 in order to confirm a concert date for spring next year.
As the project can only happen with community support, the Creative District invites the community to make a pledge. Pledge forms are available online via the Creative District’s website, newportcreativedistrict. com/spokane-symphony-plays-newport.
