NEWPORT — Soroptimist International of Newport has awarded Kathleen Huffman with the 2026 Michelene (Micki) O’Neill Weisbarth Memorial Award, recognizing women pursuing education while overcoming personal and financial barriers to create brighter futures for themselves, their families and their communities.

Huffman is currently pursuing a degree in behavioral health with an emphasis in applied behavioral analysis through Spokane Falls Community College. Her longterm goal is to become a school and family counselor, supporting children and families through life’s challenges while advocating for youth mental health and emotional well-being.

“Helping children feel safe, supported, and understood is what drives me,” Huffman shared in a Soroptimist news release.

Combined with her own personal journal, Huffman’s personal experienced inspired her to pursue a career in behavioral health and counseling. She hopes to one day provide children and families with the support systems she understands are essential to healing and long-term success.

Balancing work, higher education and raising her family, Huffman remains focused on completing her degree and expanding opportunities for youth in rural communities. She views education not only as a pathway for personal growth, but also to give back and strengthen the community she calls home.

“I want to be someone who helps young people recognize their strengths, overcome challenges, and know they have someone advocating for them,” Huffman said.

Huffman will receive a cash award from Soroptimist to support her continued education and career goals.

The Michelene (Micki) O’Neill Weisbarth Memorial Award was established in 2022 to support women with financial needs who are pursuing education. Through generous donations, the annual award assists recipients with tuition costs and daily expenses so they can focus on reaching their educational and professional goals.

The award honors the legacy of Michelene “Micki” O’Neill Weisbarth, who served in local and regional leadership roles and was especially passionate about scholarship opportunities that empowered women to achieve economic independence and fulfill their dreams.
