Cutter announces contest winners, events

METALINE FALLS — The Cutter Theatre has announced the winners of the Bigfoot art contest, to which 10 students submitted entries.

Malinda Sullivan won first place in the ages 14–18 category. Deklan Kardos won first in ages 9–13, followed by Emma Johnson and Gernet Maxwell. In ages 5–8, Sadie Kardos won first, Eliza Johnson won second and Navie Bean won third.

The 10 students’ work will be on display in the Cutter Gallery soon.

The Cutter also announced the winners of the raffle for the carved Bigfoot: Greg and Marsha Smith.

Greg Smith owns Blueslide Resort and is most excited to have won, according to a Cutter newsletter.

The Cutter expects to see Bigfoot on display at the resort on the west side of the river, just south of the Blueslide Tunnel.

The Cutter Clutter is ongoing, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wednesday and Friday until the Highway 31 Yard Sale in September. New items continue to arrive.

Attendees are welcome to bring treasures to the Clutter by checking in at the office. This activity helps support the operation and maintenance of the building.

A special Artscape for adults aged 50 and older is from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, July 3 in the Green Room. Linnea Scheel will have activity tables available, and attendees may share cuttings, plants or seeds, bring copies of their favorite recipes, play cards or learn arts and crafts. Scheel provides coffee, tea, water and light snacks. There is no cost for this event, but donations are appreciated. Pre-registration is suggested but not required.

The Cutter is holding building tours between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Saturday, July 4, inviting attendees to celebrate the U.S. Semiquincentennial with a Cutter history lesson. Tours are also offered between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18.

Bingo is returning at 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday, July 12 in the Green Room. The cost remains the same at $5, and $5 for lunch. The Cutter has new prizes for both children and adults.

There is a theatre workshop in costuming from 1–3 p.m. Friday, July 16. Attendees will explore theatre costuming and have time in the Costume Room. This workshop is for children aged 10 or older. Cost is a suggested donation of $5, and attendees can sign at the office, reachable at 509-446-4108. The Cutter his hosting an art contest for Down River Days for youth aged 5–18. The subject is “LANDSCAPE” using any medium, with an 8-inch-by-10-inch or letter size requirement. Entries are due Wednesday, July 22, and judging is during Down River Days. Awesome prizes promised, according to the newsletter.

An art camp is from noon to 3 p.m. Monday, July 27, Wednesday, July 29 and Friday, July 31. This camp is for grades one through six, the cost being $40. Projects will involve a color wheel, tiedye shirts, abstract canvas tarp painting and a group mural. All materials are included, including a T-shirt.

There is also a library event, Mobius in the Green Room, Wednesday, Aug. 5, and Final Friday, Aug.

The Cutter needs items for its annual auction, which is Saturday, Sept. 19. Parties with new or very gently used, auction-quality items are encouraged to reach out to the Cutter.

The Cutter is installing a new front door this year, and the money from the auction will go toward that project. The old door lets in heat and cold, according to the newsletter, and the new door will be an 8 foot like it was when the building was originally built in the early 20th century.

Before the auction, there will be a shrimp boil and ping pong raffle.

Volunteer help is still needed.

The Cutter wants to repaint some window frames this year, so would-be volunteers who are passionate about painting are encouraged to reach out. So far this year, 77 volunteers have contributed over 2,000 hours to the Cutter, helping to save on costs associated with a larger, paid staff. The Cutter has no paid full-time employees, only some part-time staff, and maintaining the building is a costly process.
