Clark the Clam

Dug in the cool wet sand At the bottom of the Pacific Ocean There it is deep where currents never cease Clark had a promise to keep He couldn’t keep it under the sand He couldn’t keep it under his foot Clark had but one foot — no toes Waves go up and down and his shell closes He lives alone in a cove And of coarse he wears no sock — no shoe — no clothes His secret is hidden away each day Brought out each and every night Into the starlight when stars are bright Clark keeps his secret in a hope chest He looks inside at high tide Clark pulls up the secret with pride Inside is a lot of stuff with ocean dust Secret is in a can with crusty rust It is moldy and folded and worn A tattered word or two out of the ocean blue It says — “I LOVE YOU!” - Elaine Magdalene Faires
