Celebrating the country’s 250th

NEWPORT – The Pend Oreille County Historical Society hosted its annual membership meeting Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Oldtown Rotary Park. The meeting included KSPS PBS Northwest Profiles writer and host Tom McArthur and former KREM TV news reporter.

The free Community Appreciation Day followed later that evening at the Pend Oreille County Historical Museum in Newport, pictured, with root beer floats, cookies, historical reenactors, and live music to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday.

There’s still time to check out the museum before it closes for the season. Hours are Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, 1-4 p.m.

Admission is $6 per adult, and children 12 and under are free. The museum’s research library is open yearround on Wednesdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. by appointment. The season is May through Labor Day and closed through the winter.
