COLVILLE – The Annual American Legion Riders 9/11 Remembrance Ride is coming through Pend Oreille County Saturday, Sept. 12. The ride commemorates the 3,000 lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington D.C. in 2001 and will also celebrate the country’s 250th birthday.
On a fateful day Sept. 11, 2001, two hijacked passenger planes slammed into the Twin Towers in New York and another into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. A fourth plane (United Airlines Flight 93) crashed into a rural field after crew and passengers fought back against the hijackers.
Registration for the ride begins at 8 a.m. in the Colville Super 1 Foods parking lot with coffee and donuts. Riders will receive a commemorative patch. There will be a group photo at 8:45 a.m.
Kickstands go up at 9:11 a.m. and riders depart for Beaver Lodge. The ride continues from there to Ione at 10:45 a.m., with a brief stop before continuing to Metaline Falls at 11:45 a.m.
The American Legion Kaniksu Post and Auxilliary Unit #144 invites the public to help welcome the riders by gathering at the Metaline Falls Bridge during their arrival. Flags will be supplied for waving as the riders cross. The riders will stop for lunch at the legion post at 12:15 p.m. before leaving at 1:15 p.m. for the Kalispel Tribe Pow Wow grounds, where they will do an honor ride. Then it’s off to the Cusick American Legion Hall for dessert at 2:45 p.m.
The event is hosted by American Legion Post #54 of Chewelah and Post #47 of Colville. The public is welcome to line the route with flags and 9/11 commemorations. Pedestrians and motorists should practice safety awareness and not impede traffic.
