SelPort leads league in football

IONE – The SelPort football team, a combination of Selkirk and Northport high schools, defeated Springdale at home Friday, Sept. 11, 56-24.

SelPort led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter, and added another 20 points in the second quarter, to lead 26-8 at the half. They kept Springdale to on touchdown a quarter in the second half, while scoring 24 points in the third and six in the fourth for the win.

SelPort is now 2-0, and leading the Northeast 1B League, followed by Cusick, Springdale, Columbia- Hunters, Curlew, Republic and Inchelium.

They host Curlew Friday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.

Spartans tie with Maniacs

OROFINO — The Lady Spartans’ soccer team tied with the Orofino Maniacs, 2-2, in an away game Monday, Sept. 14.

“It was a good game played by both sides,” coach Danielle Carey said.

Spartan Rachel Roberts played a fantastic game, breaking Orofino’s defense and scoring from two of her breakaways.

Priest River will be back at home against Grangeville at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18.

Spartan volleyball hits winning streak

PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River Lamanna High School volleyball team has hit a five-game win streak early into the season.

The Spartans (1-0, 5-1) played twice last week. They visited Riverside (0-0, 0-4) Tuesday, Sept. 8, winning 3-0, before hosting Orofino (0-2, 1-6) Thursday, Sept. 10 — defeating both teams in three straight sets. Against Orofino, the Spartans were pushed to a deuce in the second set, but came out 27-25 regardless. They took the first and third sets 25-18.

These wins follow three others: a 3-1 win visiting Bonners Ferry (0-0, 3-3) Tuesday, Sept. 1, another 3-0 win, hosting Wallace (0-0, 2-5) Saturday, Aug. 29 and yet another 3-0 win visiting Timberlake (0-0, 5-4) Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Priest River next visited St. Maries Tuesday, Sept. 15 after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Later this week, they visit Kellogg at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17. Next week, they host Riverside at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21 and Kellogg at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Rangers claim volleyball season opener

METALINE FALLS — In a five-set season opener, the Selkirk School District volleyball team won 3-2 against Chewelah Tuesday, Sept. 8 at home.

A few days before facing Chewelah (1-0, 1-2), the Rangers (0-0, 1-0) played in a jamboree tournament hosted by the Cougars Friday, Sept. 4.

Selkirk next visited Springdale Tuesday, Sept. 15 after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Later this week, they host Columbia at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, then visit two schools Saturday, Sept. 19: Republic at noon and Curlew at 4 p.m. Next week, they host Columbia again at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22.
