Lady Grizzlies beat Rams, host Gorillas Thursday

SPOKANE — The Newport High School girls’ soccer team split last week between victory and defeat, beating their guests the Riverside Rams 5-2 Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Joelle Brandtner scored three goals to help the Grizzlies defeat the Rams in a nonleague matchup.

Scarlett Whitehouse scored a goal for Newport in the 18th minute of the game, with an assist by Delaney Brandtner. Maci Brandtner came back for another in the 25th, with an assist by Scarlett Whitehouse. In the 79th minute, Brandtner got the final goal, assisted by Maci Brandtner.

Newport’s goalkeeper Emma Verity grabbed 15 saves. Riverside’s Olivia Brouillet had 14. The Grizzlies took 12 shots on goal while Riverside had seven.

Later last week, Newport had a hard loss, 9-0, against Northwest Christian in an away game Thursday, Sept. 10.

Northwest Christian is a very strong team and clearly got the better of us,” coach Laura Verity said. “We are still working out some pieces of our lineup and look forward to being more competitive next time we face them and throughout the season.”

Newport had an away game at Freeman Tuesday after the newspaper’s deadline. The Grizzlies will host Davenport Thursday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. The team travels to Kettle Falls for a game Tuesday, Sept. 22, also at 4 p.m.
