COLBERT — The Cusick High School cross country team is off to a head start this season.
They travelled Tuesday, Sept. 8 to Northwest Christian High School in Colbert for the NWC Josh Wright Memorial Jamboree and Mud Run, placing fourth overall with a score of 103.
In the varsity men’s 2-mile, Richard Sandwick placed seventh with a time of 12:17. Not far behind was Marshal Eveland, who clocked in at 13:05, finishing 13th. Nick Sandwick finished 23rd with a time of 14:10, followed by Abram Sandwick at 24th with a time of 14:11. James Lilya finished 38th after clocking in at 17:04.
Later that week, they travelled Saturday, Sept. 12 to Farragut State Park by Athol for the Timberlake Invitational. “This was a competitive race with a mix of small and large schools and 143 runners from surrounding states,” coach Sophia Larson says. “Our boys had a great opening meet.”
In the varsity men’s 5,000-meter, Richard Sandwick finished 33rd, the highest placement of the Panthers. He clocked in at 17:27.87. Marshal Eveland finished 85th with a time of 19:20.42, closely followed by Abram Sandwick at 89th with a time of 19:26.77. Nick Sandwick finished 115th, his time 20:47.22.
“We were not able to score as a team this meet but plan to for the remainder of the season,” Larson says.
Cusick travels Saturday, Sept. 19 to the Old Kettle Falls Picnic Area for the CAN-AM Invitational, with the varsity men’s 5,000-meter at 12:25 p.m. Next week is the NE2B League Meet Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Newport High School, with the varsity men’s 5,000-meter at 5:15 p.m.
