PRIEST RIVER — From noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, along with all the celebrating of Oktoberfest in downtown Priest River, the Friends of the Library will celebrate 100 years of having a library in Priest River.
In the library, there will be lots of games and activities for the children, including a bookworm guessing contest (winner gets to take home a gallon of gummy worms), a ping pong toss contest (winners receive free books from Main Street Books), an art project to make a personalized bookmark (all materials provided) and, of course, birthday party hats and cupcakes.
The Friends will also be having their huge annual book sale in front of Main Street Books, next to the Library on Main Street. Thousands of books of all kinds will be available for purchase at $2 per bag. In addition to books, there are DVDs, CDs and audio books. There’s fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, children and youth, history, biographies, pet care, landscaping and more.
Book store hours that day will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All proceeds from Main Street Books sales go to the library’s needs.
Town hall to feature library district, abbey
NEWPORT — There will be a Community Town Hall at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 in the PUD conference room, featuring guest speakers Mandy Walters, Pend Oreille County Library District director, and Thubten Jigme of Sravasti Abbey.
The goal of this event is to highlight unique resources available to residents.
Walters will share information about the importance of the local library system, including services available and projections for its future uses. Thubten Jigme will present a snapshot of the Abbey’s history in the area and how its goals support the Pend Oreille River Valley community. They will answer written questions following their presentation.
The Town Hall will be held at the PUD conference room in Newport, accessible from Pine Street. Doors open at 12:45 p.m. and the program begins at 1 p.m.
Everyone is welcome to attend and learn.
Local student makes SNHU President’s List
MANCHESTER, N.H. — Kyana Klineline of Newport has been named to the Southern New Hampshire University’s Summer 2026 President’s List.
The list includes full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 and above for the reporting term. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired eight-week terms grouped in fall, winter/ spring and summer. The summer terms run from May to August.
