NEWPORT — The Newport football team had another successful outing this past Friday, beating Kettle Falls 28-6 on the road. The Grizzlies are now 2-1.
Newport rushed for 367 yards on 48 carries, dominating the run game.
“We really didn’t need to throw the ball,” coach Mark Duxbury said.
Quarterback Nate Shaw was two of three for zero yards passing.
Kutter Driver had 24 carries for 216 yards. He had two touchdown runs, one for 44 yards and the other for 54.
Preston Wacenske had 17 carries 105 yards and one TD, the first score of the game on a 13 yard run. Gavin Estrada had five carries for 29 yards and Shaw had two carries for 17 yards and one touchdown.
Newport scored their first touchdown in the first quarter with Wacenske’s 13yard run. The PAT by Damien Hamburg was good. Driver scored both his touchdowns in the second quarter, to lead 21-0 at the half. Shaw’s 8 yard scoring run was in the third quarter.
Newport’s defense was also on point.
They allowed 177 total yards and one touchdown that came with 1:30 left in the game. Their PAT attempt failed. Kettle rushed 25 times for 75 yards and were nine of 25 for 102 yards in the air.
Newport hosts Priest River Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. for the much anticipated Border Battle. Priest River is 2-1 after soundly defeating Timberlake and Logos.
