CUSICK — Between two losses in the last week, the Cusick High School volleyball team got their second win of the season.
Cusick (1-3, 2-3) hosted Chesterton (1-1, 1-1) Tuesday, Sept. 15, falling after five hard-fought sets.
The Panthers started off strong with two straight set wins, taking both 25-22.
However, Chesterton turned the game around soon after, winning the third set 22-25. Chesterton went on to win the fourth set 25-20, bringing the teams to a tiebreaker set, which Cusick lost 15-13.
Lexie Seuss led the Panthers with 24 digs, 10 kills and two blocks. Denise Whitford-Renaud added 23 assists and five aces, Lacey Porter two blocks.
Over the weekend, Cusick hosted Curlew (1-1, 1-2) Saturday, Sept. 19, getting their second win of the season after five back-and-forth sets.
The teams went into a deuce in the first set, before Curlew took it 26-24.
Cusick worked to even out the score, dominating Curlew 25-9 in the second set and 25-10 in the third.
Curlew turned the game around by taking the fourth set 25-18, but dropped the tiebreaker set 1315 to Cusick.
Leading the Panthers again was Seuss, with 15 digs, 10 assists, nine blocks and eight aces. Whitford- Renaud added 16 assists. Cusick also hosted Republic (2-1, 3-4) Saturday, Sept. 19, falling after another five hard-fought sets.
Though Cusick started off strong and took the first set 25-16, Republic took the second 25-19 and third 25-20.
The Panthers eventually caught up to Republic in the fourth set, winning it 25-23 and bringing the teams to a tiebreaker set. However, Republic managed to finish out the win, taking the tiebreaker 15-12.
Seuss and Whitford-Renaud continued to lead the Panthers, the former with 10 kills and four aces and the latter with 13 assists and four aces. Kaylani Treetop added 20 digs, Porter one block.
Cusick next visited Republic Tuesday, Sept. 22, after The Miner’s weekly deadline.
Later this week, Cusick hosts Columbia at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24. The Panthers visit the Selkirk Rangers at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, then host Northport at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30.
