Master Gardeners to teach class on better gardening

NEWPORT — The WSU Pend Oreille County Master Gardeners presents “Understanding Soils,” an in-depth educational class on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Create Arts Center, located at 900 W. Fourth St., Newport.

Soil is the foundation of all plant and animal life.

This informative class will help participants gain a deeper understanding of what lies beneath their feet and how healthy soil supports productive gardens, thriving landscapes and sustainable growing practices.

During the evening, participants will explore how soils are formed, examine the biological and chemical properties that influence soil health and learn how organic amendments can improve soil structure and fertility. Instructors will also discuss practical strategies for composting, using cover crops and applying mulch to build and maintain resilient soils throughout the growing season.

Whether a beginner gardener or someone with years of experience, this class will provide valuable information to help improve soil management practices and promote the long-term health and productivity of garden and landscape. The cost of the class is $5.
