NEWPORT — Out of dozens of 1B and 2B league runners at the Newport-hosted NE2B League Meet Tuesday, Sept. 22, a couple Grizzlies broke into the top.
In the girls’ varsity 5,000-meter, junior Olivia Collins finished sixth of 37 runners, her time 23:31.9.
Leading the boys was senior Johnathan Hill, who finished 23rd of 84 runners with a time of 20:42.4. Not far behind him was junior Aiden Tieman, who finished 44th with a time of 22:43.6, barely missing the top half.
Sophomore Elijah Sattleen clocked in at 23:24.1, finishing 51st; sophomore Leif Axel clocked in at 24:49.5, finishing 64th; junior John Hamilton clocked in at 27:13.9, finishing 73rd; sophomore Acein Johnston clocked in at 27:30.3, finishing 74th; junior Logan Rheinford clocked in at 30:30.3, finishing 80th; and sophomore Vinny Hill clocked in at 31:09.8, finishing 82nd.
As a team, the boys finished last at 10th, their score 226.
Following Collins were junior Aurelia Johnson, who finished 25th with a time of 26:33.1, and freshman Emilie Baugh, who finished 30th with a time of 28:19.3.
Newport next ran in the 2026 Lake Spokane XC Invite at Lakeside Saturday, Sept. 26.
Once again, Collins broke into the top in the small schools girls’ 5,000-meter, finishing third of 20 runners with a time of 21:26.8. Johnson also finished in the top half, clocking in at 25:03.4 to finish 10th. Baugh clocked in at 25:57.6 to finish 14th.
For the boys, Tieman led in ninth of 21 runners with a time of 20:57.4. Just short of the top half was freshman Colton Moore, who finished 13th after clocking in at 21:36.8. Freshman Waylon Persyn Moore clocked in at 23:06.2, finishing 19th, and Axel clocked in at 23:07, finishing 20th. This week, Newport ran in NE 1B/2B League #2 at Short Game Golf Course Tuesday, Sept. 29, after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Next week, they run in NE2B League Meet #3 at Harrington Golf and Country Club Tuesday, Oct. 6, with times TBA.
