CUSICK — The Cusick High School volleyball team traded a win and a loss last week.
Cusick (2-4, 3-4) visited Northport (2-0, 5-1) Tuesday, Sept. 22, losing in three straight sets.
The Panthers trailed behind Northport for most of the game, dropping the first set 10-25 and the second 11-25. Despite coming close in the third set, they barely missed the win, ending the third set 23-25.
Alexa Seuss led Cusick with 13 digs, 10 kills, four aces and four blocks. Denise Whitford-Renaud added 14 assists, Lacey Porter three blocks.
“We were not able to close out the win to force additional sets,” coach BriAnna Balcom says.
Still, the Panthers went on to win in three straight sets Thursday, Sept. 24, against the visiting Columbia Lions (0-4, 1-5).
This was a decisive win for Cusick, Balcom says. The Panthers overwhelmed Columbia with each set, taking the first 25-14, the second 25-13 and the third 25-20, despite the Lions’ attempts to catch up.
“The Panthers controlled the pace of all of the sets,” Balcom says.
Seuss and Whitford-Renaud led Cusick once again, with Seuss having 16 digs, 15 kills and a block and Whitford-Renaud having 27 assists, six aces and a block. Jazzlyn Rutherford added five aces.
“We are happy to have Jazzlyn Rutherford back in the lineup for Thursday’s game,” Balcom says.
Cusick next visited Selkirk Tuesday, Sept. 29 after The Miner’s weekly deadline. They host Northport at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, before hosting Inchelium at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6.
