NEWPORT — Out of 10 1B and 2B schools at the Newport-hosted NE2B League Meet Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Panthers finished fifth.
“We wanted to beat all other 1B schools, but the team finished just behind Valley Christian,” coach Sophia Larson says.
Leading Cusick in the boys’ 5,000-meter was senior Richard Sandwick, who finished fifth out of 84 runners with a time of 17:55. In 16th was freshman Marshal Eveland, time 19:58, and in 20th was eighth-grader Abram Sandwick, time 20:06. Abram Sandwick both executed his race plan and did his job well, Larson says, earning him the honor of Boys Runner of the Week.
Sophomore Nick Sandwick clocked in at 21:30, finishing 32nd. Last but not least, sophomore James Lilya clocked in at 23:52, finishing 56th.
“Our first, second and third runners kept gaps small,” Larson says. “But our gaps after that were too large.”
Larson describes the course as deceptively tough due to some back hills. Still, she adds, the Panthers made a good showing there.
“We did a great job running out front, running as a pack and getting out quick,” Larson says.
Cusick ran in the NE 1B/2B League #2 at Short Game Golf Course Tuesday, Sept. 29, after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Next week, they run in NE2B League Meet #3 at Harrington Golf and Country Club Tuesday, Oct. 6, with times TBA.
