BONNERS FERRY — A few Spartan runners reached top placements at the Bonners Ferry Invite Tuesday, Sept. 22.
In the boys’ varsity/JV 5,000-meter, senior Daniel Gunkle finished first with a time of 18:54, leading Priest River Lamanna. Not far behind was freshman Seth Paschetag, who finished second with a time of 19:21. Eighth of the 10 runners was junior Maxwell Hewitt, time 22:38.
For the girls, sophomore Abagail Shaulis finished sixth with a time of 26:22, in the top half of 15 runners.
Only a couple places back was senior Lydia Paterson, who finished eighth with a time of 27:08. Freshman Ailish Mc-Laimtaig clocked in at 28:51, finishing 11th; sophomore Maiyu Smith clocked in at 29:26, finishing 13th; and senior Breelynn Duran clocked in at 29:28, finishing 14th.
As a team, the girls finished second and last behind Bonners Ferry, their score 45.
The Spartans next ran at the Nike Bob Firman Invitational XC Friday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26 at The Course Spokane Valley.
In the boys’ varsity Division II 5,000-meter, Gunkle led the Spartans once again, finishing 51st with a time of 17:50.5. Paschetag finished 80th, time 18:44.1. Sophomore Tadhg Conor McLaimtaig clocked in at 20:01.4, finishing 115th, and Hewitt clocked in at 21:00.9, finishing 133rd.
Ailish McLaimtaig finished 82nd for the girls, clocking in at 24:22.3. Shaulis finished 89th, clocking in at 24:44.3. Paterson, time 25:42.5, finished 102nd; senior Alannah Mc-Laimtaig, time 25:50.4, finished 105th; Maiyu Smith, time 26:33.9, finished 117th; Sakura Smith, time 27:26.3, finished 122nd; and Duran, time 27:37.8, finished 123rd.
They finished last of the girls’ teams at 16th, their score 395.
This week, the Spartans run in the Ben Castro Invite at Pinehurst Golf Course, with times TBA.
