NEWPORT — The Newport High School volleyball team won three of four games in the last week, all in straight sets.
“This team is working hard and coming together well,” coach Kathy Eggleston says.
Tuesday, Sept. 22, Newport (3-1, 4-2) hosted Davenport (2-3, 2-5) and won 3-0.
The Grizzlies took an early lead, winning the first set 25-11. However, Eggleston says Davenport had a strong defense and returned many of Newport’s attacks, forcing the Grizzlies to work for every point. They took the second set 25-20 and the third 25-23, working hard to hold onto their lead to the end.
Kaylia Earl had a strong night, Eggleston says, with 17 digs, four kills, one block and one assist.
Kenna Arthur added 30 assists, two digs, two aces and two kills; Grace Parry 14 kills, one assist and one block; Marri Hinchliff 12 digs, six kills, one ace and one block; Lily Jenkins three blocks, three digs and two kills; Abby Martin seven digs, two assists and one ace; Grace Keck 11 digs, one ace and one assist; and Bella Boyd three digs, three kills and two blocks.
Wednesday, Sept. 23, they visited Riverside (0-0, 1-7), winning 3-0 again. Riverside fell further behind Newport with each set, as the Grizzlies took the first 25-16, the second 25-15 and the third 25-12.
Hinchliff, Martin, Arthur and Keck each got two aces, and Cooper Reed led with three. Arthur also got 23 assists, four digs, two kills and one block.
Parry added 12 kills and one block; Jenkins three blocks; Earl eight kills, five digs, two assists and one block; and Boyd four digs and two kills.
“We had a great serving game across the board,” Eggleston says.
Thursday, Sept. 24, Newport hosted Jenkins from Chewelah (1-4, 1-6), taking their third 3-0 win of the week.
The Grizzlies came out strong this game and held onto it, Eggleston says.
They won the first set 25-7, the second 25-12 and the third 25-5.
“The team really worked on opening up options,” Eggleston says.
Boyd’s serve was key to the Grizzlies’ success, as she went on a 14-point run during the second set, even getting two aces. Eggleston says she also got three digs and a block.
Martin earned some experience as libero with 16 digs. Earl added 10 kills and five digs; Arthur 21 assists, three kills, two digs and two aces; Parry eight kills, three blocks and one dig; Hinchliff three digs, three kills, two aces and one block; Jenkins two blocks; Reed one dig, one ace and one kill; and Keck six digs.
“We’ve got a lot of power on the net and back it up with a strong defense,” Eggleston says.
Monday, Sept. 28, Newport hosted Liberty from Spangle (2-2, 5-3), who broke the Grizzlies’ win streak 2-3.
The Grizzlies visited Kettle Falls Tuesday, Sept. 29 after The Miner’s weekly deadline. They visit Saint George’s at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, before visiting Reardan at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6.
