BLANCHARD — Who says history has no flavor?

From the pages of “Spirit Valley Cookbook: The Food and History of Blanchard, Idaho,” published in 2003, comes a plethora of recipes from community members, including illustrations by local artist Christine Veblen Bishop.

In a time when people are pumping out AI art and text like turning a faucet on full blast with no thought as to what happens if the figurative kitchen gets flooded, there’s something wholesome about community cookbooks. It’s nourishment from your friends and neighbors, and honestly, that’s we should all be endeavoring to give and receive.

On that note, the following is Erik Bishop’s recipe for mango smoothie. I added a banana and some vanilla powder, but otherwise, I followed Erik’s directions and was rewarded with a creamy, fresh drink that I’ve returned to several times since my first foray.

Erik’s Mango Smoothies * ¾ C. buttermilk * 2 ½ C. diced fresh or frozen mango * ¼ tsp. ground ginger * ½ C. vanilla yogurt * 1 T. fresh lime juice * 1 tsp. grated, fresh ginger. * 3–6 ice cubes Combine buttermilk and yogurt in a blender. Add mangoes, lime juice, fresh ginger and ground ginger. With the blender running, add ice cubes one at a time until they are blended into the drink, and smoothie reaches desired consistency. Note: This also works well with frozen berries, and you can add protein powder for an added boost.
