NEWPORT — The Newport High School volleyball team won two more games last week, remaining third in the Northeast 2B North league.
Newport (7-3, 8-5) visited fifthranked Davenport (4-7, 4-9) Thursday, Oct. 15, winning 3-0.
“The team played really well working with players in new positions,” coach Kathy Eggleston says.
The Grizzlies have seen some injuries toward the end of this season, relying on bench depth to support the team. These players have been doing an amazing job, Eggleston says.
Marri Hinchliff came in great as setter, with 23 assists, 13 digs and two aces, Eggleston says. Lily Jenkins had a strong night and went on some great serve runs, adding eight digs, two aces and one kill. Kaylia Earl, consistent as always, added 13 kills, 13 digs and four aces.
Grace Keck added 11 digs, two assists and one ace; Grace Parry 13 kills, eight blocks, three digs, one assist and one ace; Abby Martin 11 digs; Kaelynn Smith four digs, one block and one assists; and Autumn Jett two blocks and one kill.
That weekend, Newport visited seventh-ranked Jenkins (1-10, 1-13) in Chewelah Saturday, Oct. 17, winning 3-0 again.
“Team played really well together,” Eggleston says.
Earl and Keck, both seniors, took on leadership roles in encouraging their team to compete and work through mistakes, Eggleston says. They were everywhere on the court, keeping the ball in play. Earl had 14 kills, seven digs, three aces and one block, and Keck had five digs and two aces.
Martin added three digs and one ace; Parry nine kills, four aces, two digs and two blocks; Jenkins five kills, four aces, two digs and one block; and Hinchliff 21 assists, four digs, one ace and one block.
The Grizzlies hosted Kettle Falls Tuesday, Oct. 20 after The Miner’s weekly deadline. Next week, they host St. George’s at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27.
